Originally modeled after the brilliant acting of Peter Sellers’ portrayal of Jacques Clouseau, a bungling detective from the 1963 feature-film The Pink Panther, the cartoon in the opening credits—originally designed by Hawley Pratt—ended up becoming a spin-off of its own that grew to a greater popularity than the films themselves. The opening sequence and the cartoon that followed subsequently was a created by DePatie-Frelend Enterprises, a Hollywood-based animation company also known for creating the popular cartoon adaptations of Dr. Seuss. Overall, the Pink Panther starred in 124 shorts and featured in the opening and closing credits for the sequels A Shot in the Dark and Inspector Clouseau.
The opening film credits to the first film went over so well with audiences that United Artists signed FrizFreleng and his studio to produce individual shorts. The premiere short was The Pink Phink featuring The Pink Panther harassing a person who would forever be known as the “Little Man” over what color to paint the house, resulting in a hilarious tug-of-war between blue and pink paint. The Pink Phink received Academy acclaim winning an Oscar in 1964 for best animated short film. The Pink Panther silently tormenting the Little Man became the successful formula for further releases. In the early animations—the good ones—The Pink Panther was silent. Only Sink Pink and Pink Ice featured the Panther speaking.
What made The Pink Panther among The Best Cartoon Characters was the catchy saxophone tune composed by Henry Mancini originally for the opening score of the 1963 film which ended up following the character throughout the entire existence. The Pink Panther saw many changes down the road, including an NBC television show that featured talking and laugh tracks, a series involving his songs Pinky and Panky and a pair of films with Steve Martin reviving the Inspector Clouseau character.
They say classical animation died in the 1960’s, with styles transitioning outward to reinvent themselves outside the Golden Age of animation. The Pink Panther was drawn in its own style, one that was streamlined and classy with a style of absurdity, surrealism and visual puns.
