A quick look into the brief history of OTF Out the Front switchblades

OTF out the front switchblades have been around since as early as the 1860s. However, it is very difficult to narrow down on any one inventor or inventors who may have come up with this kind of switchblade. When considering the kind of switchblade you wish to carry, there can be multiple options to choose from. There are the old classics and constantly evolving new styles. When it comes to the OTF kind, there are a few specific features that make them distinct from the other kinds.

* They deploy the blade straight out the front
* They basically come in three variants i.e. single action, double action and manual
* They have a very light-duty blade and should not be mistaken as a kind of fighting knife

OTF out the front switchblades have been around since as early as the 1860s. However, it is very difficult to narrow down on any one inventor or inventors who may have come up with this kind of switchblade. That is because many patents were filed simultaneously. Earlier, also known as gravity knives, these were designed to be used by people who may have to hold on to something. To put it in simpler words, these were designed as pretty handy knives that were used for freeing oneself from rope tangles or to hold something up quickly.

When you buy OTF out the front switchblades, you would also hear them being referred to as mechanically opening knives which can be understood as a more generic term for other kinds of switchblades as well. These knives were also made popular by the 1950s gang movies and were brought home as souvenirs by WW-II US military personnel.

* The main parts of an OTF knife

A typical OTF knife essential comprises of the following five to size parts.

-There is a slider with an anti rattle spring.
-Then there is a blade open lock followed by a blade closed lock
-Adjacent to both the above mentioned locks is the stop or close pin
-Internally, there are parts such as the main spring, a fire open hook, a fire closed hook, machined lock actuator and so on.

* Difference between the three types of OFTs available

As suggested by their name, single action OFTs use a spring mechanism to open the blade and they have to be closed manually. On the other hand, double action OFTs use a similar spring mechanism to both close and open the blade. When it comes to the manual OFTs, there is no automation and the blade has to be handled using a sliding button. The spring only propels the blade about 1/4 of the way open.
