There once was a day when every family had a reliable camera. The camera would accompany the family on weekend drives, on trips to the beach and on summer vacations. The camera and the family were inseparable. That day is long gone. Now, with the rapid and continuing rise of Smartphones, more and more people are turning to their cell phone to carry out their photography needs.
It is easy to see the appeal of the smartphone camera. People generally have their smartphone with them wherever they go; and it is very convenient to have the ability to take a photo and immediately upload it to social networking sites all from the same device. After all, why carry around two devices when you only need one? Not to mention the companies producing countless photography apps for smartphones, eager to pounce on the new enthusiasm many have for this formerly more exclusive pastime. It is fair to say that the diversity and quality of smartphones is having a significant impact on camera sales globally.
According to the Photo Marketing Association (PMA) in the United Kingdom, compact camera sales fell $72.8 million for the year of 2011. This is a massive hit to an industry that once seemed unthreatened and untouchable. The reasons for this could be many and varied, but Nigel McNaught of the PMA puts it very simply: “Smartphones are getting better.”
He is right, smartphones are getting better. New released higher-end smartphones are generally sold with cameras boasting greater than 5 megapixels. While this is not going to convince a photography enthusiast to ditch their SLR, cameras of this caliber are more than sufficient for the everyday person who just wants to document the lives of their family. The photography apps mentioned previously are making smartphones even more enticing. These applications can allow smartphones to carry out functions that until now have been exclusive to more traditional cameras. Functions such as red eye elimination, light balancing and contrasting can all be done with smartphone technology, a massive advancement on the past.
So what does the future hold for the traditional camera? If the technological capability of smartphones continues to increase at the current rapid rate, we will undoubtedly see more and more people ditching their cameras in favor of the all-integrated smartphone. While the quality of smartphone cameras is not yet up to par with more traditional forms of photography, it seems like only a matter of time until smartphones really will be the smarter choice.
