Iris Scan – The Foolproof Biometric Lock

With the advancement in technology, we can now safely secure our property such as house, vehicle etc. without needing a physical lock and key. The use of human attributes such as facial features, fingerprints and iris in the human eye has gained much popularity in the current century. Metrics associated with human characteristics is called Biometrics. Features such as fingerprints, hand geometry, iris have become the new keys for the biometric locks. Iris recognition is one of the popular biometric identification systems that replaced the traditional door locks. This biometric system uses mathematical pattern recognition techniques to match and recognize same iris. Human iris constitutes of complex patterns that are unique. Also, called as smart locks, Iris recognition system is widely used by governments of few countries in maintaining their citizen database. This system is used in some nations to ensure interruption free movement of people across borders. The list of nations that use the IRIS recognition system includes The Netherlands, US, Canada and India. India has enrolled more than 1 billion people in its UIDAI or Unique Identification of India biometric program wherein iris of its citizens have been scanned and each of the individuals have been assigned with a unique national identification number. The reason for the extreme popularity of iris recognition system is its feature of near impossible false match. Further, iris does not change over time. It remains unchanged even after an eye surgery. Iris scanner system can also be used by blind people if they have irises. The fact that contact lens and eye glasses do not have any impact on iris scanning also adds up to its immense popularity.

Now the next million-dollar question that comes into mind is how iris scan works. On the outside iris scanner may look like a rocket science to understand. But the actual mechanism of iris scanning is very simple. The iris scanner is equipped with a camera, infrared light and visible light. When the eye is exposed to iris scanner, it takes a high-contrast picture of an individual’s eye. The pupil of the individual is black with infrared light. The computer separates the black part or pupil from iris. With the iris separated from pupil, the computer now analyzes the pattern within the iris and coverts it into a code. As mentioned above, the probability of having a matching iris pattern is next to impossible. If we have to put a math around this probability, it would be 1 in 10 to the 78th power.

There are some associated downsides with the iris scan technology. The first and foremost among those downsides is initial investment cost for setting up an iris scanner system. Iris scanners are expensive when compared to other biometric equipment such as fingerprint scanner. In addition to the cost, light availability is an important aspect for an iris scanner to work as expected. A low light may alter the iris image capturing capability of the scanner leading to a poor or incorrect iris pattern determination and code generation. Another important factor that we need to assess is the height of the individual or subject whose iris needs to be captured. Subject needs to expose his eye without any movement for the system to capture the iris pattern. Hence, people who are short may find it difficult to rise to the level of iris scanner system and expose their eye even if it is for few seconds.

Considering the many advantages that the new age smart locks such as iris scanner can offer, one can simply ignore the negligible or insignificant disadvantages associated with them.
