The Ins And Outs of Buying Private Number Plates

Although there are over 45 million private car number plates available, it is very probable that the one that is your first choice is not for sale. This means that you need to sit down and think about several alternatives before you go hunting for that magic plate. Buying private number plates for your car can be something of a problem, in the sense that although there are over 45 million personalised registrations available (and as many as 54 million if you believe some counts) the one that you want, which is likely your initials and the number 1, won't be available. This is because somebody else with the same initials as you have has already got it and doesn't want to sell it. Even if it is available, you will need to have very deep pockets indeed: think upwards of £100,000. Other number plates such as AR53 NAL although a lot longer than your initials and the number 1, or any single number, will also not be for sale.

So when considering personalised registrations you need to broaden your horizons a little. This means that, if you want to make your car stand out, you are going to have to sit down and put your thinking cap on for a bit. The best way to do this is to grab a sheet of paper and write down anything that comes into your head. Keep the sheet handy, because once you start thinking about it more ideas will come to you over the course of the next few days. You know this to be true, because we all have moments where an idea comes to us about something that we have been considering, done, or not done, and the light suddenly switches on, maybe days later, and we think "Why didn't I think of that before?" So there is no need to rush it.

There are all sorts of letter and number combinations that you can use to create the plate that you want, such as the AR53 NAL football club suggested earlier, but even if you think that it might be obscure it may still not be available. One thing that you do need to remember is that you cannot choose a number plate which makes your car look newer than it is. With the current dating system that we have, the two numbers indicate the month and year of the vehicle's registration, so if your car was first registered in 2013 for instance, you cannot use a 68 registration because that was only issued in September 2018.

This can be quite confusing, but the simple way to remember it is that the March registration each year is the year itself, so March this year is 19 for 2019, and the September registration is the year plus 50, so September this year it will be 69. In 2020 it changes to 20 in March and 70 in September.

Having got that out of the way, once you have decided on a suitable plate you need to see if it is available, and there is a very simple way to do that. All private plate dealers have a search box on their website and all you do is to enter the plate that you want, and it will instantly tell you if it is available. If it is actually available, it may show you a price or it may not. If it doesn't, be warned: it is going to cost money! You will have to ring or email the dealer to discuss the price.

You should take note that buying a private number plate attracts VAT, so you definitely need to confirm with the dealer whether it is included in the price quoted or not. If it isn't, you can add 20% to the quoted price. There is also the DVLA transfer fee of £80 to be taken into account, and again that may or may not be included in the price.

Another thing to consider is that you have to get the actual physical plates made up. Some dealers include the cost of this in their prices and some don't, in which case you will need to get your number plates made up by a registered number plate supplier. In this instance, the registered number plate supplier will need to see documentation proving your name and address and also showing that you are allowed to use that number plate.

So, yes, there are some things to consider when buying a personalised number plate, but you should now be the wiser.
