Inculcate the Right Eating Habits in Your Children

Parents have a responsibility to guide their little ones and they must reduce exposure to ads for foods that are rich in fat, salt, sugar. They should take particular care to regulate the eating habits of their children and include more of home-made foods in their diet.
Children today are exposed to a variety of advertisements on the TV. The kid-special channels they watch for hours tempt them to try new candies, colas, instant noodles, cakes, chips and other snacks. But as an adult you know how harmful can such junk food be to the health of your child in long run.
Parents have a responsibility to guide their little ones and they must reduce exposure to ads for foods that are rich in fat, salt, sugar. They should take particular care to regulate the eating habits of their children and include more of home-made foods in their diet.

Given below are five tips to encourage good eating habits:

Have regular family meals – You may be a working couple hard-pressed for time. But if you have school going children, it is important to give them adequate attention. Have at least one meal together at home daily. Even if you can’t always have home-cooked food and prefer to bring take-away dinner once or twice a week, see that it is nutritious and you eat it together.

Serve a variety in terms of tastes and colours: We eat food by mouth but the colour, aroma and texture also matter for its appeal. You can make a simple sandwich packed in the school tiffin box attractive by garnishing it well and creating a face on it with tomato and cucumber slices. Children also like different tastes so see that your meal plan does not become monotonous. Pulses, dry vegetable, salad and a colourful dessert on table will make food more tempting for them.

Be a role model by eating right yourself- Do you keep gazing into your smartphone or tablet while eating a meal? Are you too busy or tired to listen about your child’s experiences at school? Are your own eating habits healthy? Children learn from what they see in the parents. If you don’t eat the right foods and in the right ways, your child too will go astray. Keep digital distractions away when having a meal and see that you are teaching the right table manners.

Involve kids in the process – This may not be possible everyday but you can make it a practice to involve your children in cooking or setting the table at least once every week. Tell them about the right ways to arrange plates and cutlery for a meal. Let them set up salad vegetables or garnish desserts like custard and cake. But when a very young child is in kitchen you need to be careful and see that she/he does not mishandle sharp knives or hot utensils.

At times you can let your children invite their friends for meals and let them choose the menu. The whole idea is to keep the young minds aware of good food, good eating habits and healthy lifestyle practices. You can reward them with a burger or pizza once a month but see that junk food does not become frequent. Let the children be aware of its harmful effects that come through obesity and infections.

Also, keep yourself consistently aware of what’s best for your growing child.
