How To Use Hootsuite For Your Business

Social media overload is when there’s too much social media bombarding you at one time. You have Facebook open, your Twitter account open, a Google+ profile open, a Linked In, a You Tube channel, a Pinterest board, I mean when does it stop? If this is how your browser looks everyday, then you have a bad case of social media overload. There’s no denying that social media is all the rage nowadays. From the big players like Facebook, Google+, Twitter, to the niche ones like Fubar, Line To Heaven, and Vampire Freaks. Social networks are everywhere. Although this is good for businesses because it allows for more marketing platforms, too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. If there’s such a thing as information overload, then there’s also something called “social media overload”.

You can focus all your marketing efforts into one place and give it your 100%. The cons? You only cover the mainstream audience.

The second option, is to continue with your social media overload for the sake of business. The pros? Your daily routine needs no changing. The cons? You might lose your sanity in all the confusion that’s around you.

Whether you choose the first or second option, it would seem your business will suffer. But what if I told you there is a third option? Why settle for one when you can have both? This becomes possible with a tool named Hoot Suite.

Hoot Suite was founded by Ryan Holmes way back in 2008. Ryan faced the same dilemma described previously. He had multiple social networks and he wanted to manage them under one place. Unfortunately, there was no tool that did that in 2008. So Ryan and a few of his friends decided to make one instead. The outcome was a Twitter dashboard called Bright Kit.

Ryan made Bright Kit thinking it will only find a niche audience. That it would never appeal to businesses. Boy was he wrong. Was he ever so wrong.

The world welcomed Bright Kit for its extreme usefulness, simple interface, and powerful capabilities. The warm reception made Ryan consider expanding Bright Kit to work for businesses. And so in 2009, he ran a naming contest. Whoever comes up with a name better than Bright Kit will win $500. Over 100,000 people entered the contest. But there can only be one winner. That winner was Matt Nathan and he suggested to rename Bright Kit to Hoot Suite. And the rest as they say, is history.

Think of Hoot Suite as a one-stop website where you can access all your social networks. Instead of opening three tabs for Twitter, Facebook, Linked In, you just open one tab. Instead of logging in three different times, you login just once. Efficient isn’t it? But how can I use Hoot Suite for my business? Well click the link to find out.

Use Hoot Suite to engage customers

There are two features that make Hoot Suite so popular among businesses. One is the ability to manage multiple social networks under one roof, two is the power to automate postings. Combining these features allows you to interact with customers 24 hours a day 7 days a week. That is no exaggeration.

Let’s say we have Fred who owns a small retail shop. Fred uses Facebook, Twitter, and You Tube to market his business. Now Fred is a busy man but he finds time to update his Facebook page, tweet to his followers, and upload videos. Every week Fred is able to make 3 updates to his page, 5 tweets, and 1 video (all this on a best case scenario). Not bad but it could be better.

So Fred decides to give Hoot Suite a try. He goes to the website and creates an account. He adds his Facebook, Twitter, and You Tube accounts. Fred finds it convenient that he can control all three accounts at once. But what blows Fred away is how he gets more done by doing less. Every week, Fred can now post 6 updates to his page, tweet 14 times, and upload 3 videos. And he does all that within half an hour. What a time-saver! But how is that possible?

Hoot Suite allows you to schedule a post. Whether it be a Facebook photo, a tweet, or a video, it can be scheduled. You tell Hoot Suite what day and time you want a post to go live and it does the rest. You don’t have to be logged in for this to happen. Hoot Suite will automatically post it for you.


Use Hoot Suite to track progress

The website uses a freemium model. This basically means their plans start from free going up to premium. The more money you pay, the more bells and whistles you get. One of these extra bells and whistles is analytics.

Analytics is valuable information that allows you to make adjustments (if needed) to ensure you reach your business goal. Analytics isn’t reserved for the big corporations only, even small to medium businesses will benefit from them.

Hoot Suite’s built in analytics supports the generation of customized reports, statistics (e.g. Twitter follower growth charts) and click-throughs (number of clicks your URL got). Hoot Suite also integrates with industry standard analytics like Facebook Insights and Google Analytics.

Use Hoot Suite to secure accounts

Hoot Suite isn’t limited to a single user. It also supports simultaneous users using one social media account. This means there can be 3 or more people using one Twitter account at the same time. Do I have to give them my Twitter password then? Nope. Remember you log in via Hoot Suite not via Twitter so they don’t need your Twitter password. As of this writing Hoot Suite supports Twitter, Facebook, Linked In, Google+, Foursquare, MySpace, Wordpress, Trendspottr and Mixi.
